Maria Ho

Associate Director, ATD National

Maria Ho is an Associate Director at ATD. She serves as ATD's senior research program strategist and designer, and provides oversight and direction for all of ATD's internal / external, industry-specific, and market research services. Prior to joining ATD in 2014, Maria was a public policy researcher, data analyst, and writer at the Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington, D.C.  Maria holds a Bachelor’s in economics from Harvard University and a Master’s in economics from Johns Hopkins University.

Session Overview:

ATD’s research shows that just over a third of organizations provide both upskilling and reskilling. Further, 16 percent provide upskilling only and just 4 percent provide reskilling only. Taken together, just over half of organizations provide one or both. However, there is a major need for both upskilling and reskilling programs as the skills that are in demand shift and change. What can talent development professionals do to encourage more organizations to provide these programs and what can we do to ensure that upskilling and reskilling programs are successful at driving learning and business results? Aaron De Smet

Aaron counsels leadership teams as they transform their organizations to improve performance, organizational health, speed, innovation, productivity and agility. He is expert on organizational design, corporate culture, leadership development, team effectiveness, capability building, and transformational change.

He serves clients across several industries, including agriculture, biotechnology, chemicals, energy, financial services, and healthcare.

Aaron has published many articles in McKinsey Quarterly and elsewhere. He is a member of the master faculty of the Change Leaders Forum and of the Organizational Agility Forum, which he helped establish. He has also led McKinsey’s thinking on organizational health and helped to develop the Organizational Health Index (OHI)OrgLab, and Influencer.

In business organizations, the switch to Working-from-Home (WFH) for the professional workforce happened swiftly and universally due to Covid-19. With this backdrop in mind, we conducted a research study with about 580 participants globally, both individual employees and managers, to understand their effectiveness in WFH as well their desire to return to an office environment in future. Katerina “Kate” Bezrukova, Ph.D.

Kate’s teaching and research focuses on teams and groups with topics including diversity training, negotiating skills, group/team composition, group processes, performance, and health. Kate co-authored a landmark research study: A Meta-Analytical Integration of 40 Years of Research on Diversity Training, published in the esteemed Psychological Bulletin, 2016. Her work appears in Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and Personnel Psychology, and has been featured on the PBS News Hour, ESPN the Magazine, and The Atlantic.

Lorenzo M. Boyd, Ph.D.
Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, University of New Haven

Lorenzo is a nationally recognized leader in police-community relations and an authority on urban policing, diversity issues in criminal justice, race and crime, and criminal justice systems.

He served for 14 years in the Suffolk County (Mass.) Sheriff’s department – working in policing, corrections, and the courts – which he says shaped his approach to teaching, research, and training of police commanders and officers.

As director of the University of New Haven’s Center for Advanced Policing, Dr. Boyd is working to build the center into a national resource for professional development, with a central focus on building levels of empathy and cultural competence among police leaders, officers with training role plays.

A former president of the Academy of Criminal Justice Science and a life member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), Dr. Boyd has appeared on local, regional, and national media outlets to discuss policing in the aftermath of high-profile cases, including shootings in Baton Rouge, Dallas, and Ferguson, Missouri. In 2019, he led a study addressing issues of racism, bias, and police and community relations at Yale University.

Dr. Boyd has taught at the university level for over 20 years. Prior to joining the University of New Haven, he was chair of the departments of Criminal Justice and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and earlier, at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and at Fayetteville State University. Widely published, he recently authored the book, Massachusetts's Criminal Justice System. His book chapters include "Black Lives Matter: The Watchdog for the Criminal Justice System." Lorenzo’s Ph.D. is in sociology from Northeastern University; his M.A. in applied sociology from the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

Scott Colehour

Scott Tannenbaum

President, The Group for Organizational Effectiveness

Scott Tannenbaum, PhD, is President of The Group for Organizational Effectiveness (gOE). Under his leadership, gOE has provided advice, tools, and training to over 600 organizations globally, including 30+ Fortune 100 companies.

For the last 30 years, Scott and his colleagues have worked with all types of teams, including corporate teams – such as senior leadership, finance, manufacturing, sales, project, insurance, engineering, and technology teams. They’ve supported medical and military teams, as well as more “extreme” teams, going up in planes with Smoke Jumpers, out on cruise ships after the Costa Concordia incident, down in coal mines, and out on oil rigs in the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico. He is a Fellow of SIOP and was given their Distinguished Professional Contributions Award for lifetime achievements. His latest book, Teams That Work, will be published by Oxford University Press in September.

Session Overview:

In the new world of work, teams are being used more than ever. It appears that almost everyone is expected to collaborate effectively. But while it is easy to create a team and to tell people to perform and learn collaboratively, it is quite challenging to make it work.

Why do some teams thrive, while others struggle? All leaders, team members, learning professionals, and consultants can benefit from knowing what really drives team effectiveness. Session Overview:

Innovation often produces the highest business impacts of any workforce output. When Talent Management succeeds at increasing innovation, it is not only producing a high-margin revenue stream but it is also adding economic value by helping to build your company’s brand and market share dominance. 

Unfortunately, a significant portion of organizational innovation has recently been disrupted because a large number of professional employees have been shifted to work from home positions. This has dramatically hampered innovation because data from highly innovative Silicon Valley firms has revealed that a large number of serendipitous face-to-face interactions are traditionally the primary catalyst for increasing collaboration and team innovation. However, because remote work reduces those face-to-face interactions, innovation levels are plummeting. 

So immediate proactive action is needed to determine how those previous innovation levels can be restored among teams with remote workers. This thought-provoking session will highlight the recommended practical innovation increasing actions that have been discovered by firms in the innovation driven Silicon Valley.
